Comment on the “Toolkit ”
It’s full of great practical advice for anyone coming into the world of Project Engineering – not just about managing the work but dealing with the more difficult people issues.
The Toolkit has four key features
– Based on 30 years experience
– Focus on ”soft” yet vital PE skills
– Immediate practical application
– Discipline engineering from a Projects viewpoint
Covers both core PE skills and the softer leadership and people issues.
Soft Skills: Time management, Delegation, Meeting Chairing and Facilitation, Conflict Management, Presentation Skills, Stress Management etc.
Core Skills: Position Statement, Costs, Estimating, Planning, Change Control, Risk Management, PMBOK etc.
Discipline Specific Training: Covering the key work processes, inputs and outputs of each Engineering discipline
The toolkit will be offered in three ways;
– Face to face training and coaching for small groups
– A series of webinars
– A 300 page textbook
We are currently developing a range of advanced modules which will be of value to Topsides Project Professionals.
The first of these, now availible via the webinar button above is Offshore Accommodation Projects. This is a three part collaboration with Accommodation Projects expert Roddy Scott
Roddy is an veteran offshore Accommodation Specialist Project Engineer with over 25 years’ experience gained in the Oil and Gas Industry in the North Sea and in Baku, Azerbaijan.
He is experienced as part of multi-discipline design and construction teams on a variety of Living Quarters projects from New Build Single Lift Structures, Modular Construction LQs and Modifications of Existing Offshore Living Quarters.
He now shares his knowledge and insights through this webinar collaboration with Cranston Engineering Ltd.
Roddy is available for consultancy support and can be contacted at RoddyS@cranstoneng.com
A structured approach to all aspects of Oil & Gas topsides Project Engineering that will form the basis for developing your individual style.
For an experienced Project Engineer, changing industries, the “Disciplines” modules will allow faster conversion.
This allows managers a detailed understanding of the overall Project Engineering/Management processes.
Lack of Tier 1 contractor knowledge/experience is often a blocker to gaining a position. This course will assist in demonstrating the required knowledge.
Lets the potential transitioning engineer see what Projects is really about.
If you are managing a contractor this will ensure you understand the key processes and disciplines.
For Technicians and Engineers working offshore the Toolkit provides a route to the transition to an onshore role.
The toolkit will be offered in three ways;
– Face to face training and coaching for small groups
– E Learning via a series of webinars
– A textbook
This process involves individual/small group coaching starting with information gathering on education, experience and aspirations, then providing targeted training and coaching starting with most appropriate tools and techniques.
Output to client management is structured feedback on abilities, areas for development and future potential whilst maintaining confidentiality, (within sensible limits) of discussions with person coached.
A series of 31 webinars covering all aspects of the toolkit has now been completed, proofed and uploaded to our webinar platform. This is now availible to students for immediate course access.
This will allow learning at the students own pace in any location with internet access. It is recommended that this self paced learning is supported with a number of online/in person coaching sessions to optimise the experience.
Two different versions of 300 page Project Engineer’s Toolkit textbooks have been published and are now available from many online outlets including Amazon, WH Smith etc or direct from Cranston Engineering at the following link.
The original “Toolkit” is focussed on Offshore Oil & Gas with a more recent edition published now covering Onshore Process Facilities.
I found this book very informative. It is written in such a way that it is useful for both individuals with a wealth of experience and those new to the industry. There are also many tips and pointers which have been developed from experiences and knowledge built over many years which I found extremely valuable.

The Project Engineer's Toolkit was recommended to me by a colleague at work. I am in the early stages of my career and was looking for literature which is well structured, and clearly explained to enhance my understanding of the field. This book is an excellent solution. Its structure is very well thought out and every aspect of project engineering 101 is covered - It really does live up to its name as the 'Project Engineer's Toolkit'! I especially enjoyed the chapter on planning - It helped give more clarity when I came to address this in my job. The book is very easy to navigate, and a great reference both at home and in the office. Chapters aren't too lengthy and contain clear supporting figures. I thoroughly recommend this book to both people new to the field, and more experienced Project Engineers who hope to add value to their team and projects - The book contains plenty of helpful tips and advice for this too. Overall this book is well structured, and the information provided is very effective in giving readers a good overall understanding of the topic - 5*

“The Project Engineers Toolkit is an excellent book for all those in the Project Engineering Discipline. It is structured as you would expect in three distinct sections; soft skills, core project management and the engineering disciplines. The book makes use of very effective mindmaps at the start of each chapter to summarise the content of that chapter and the content is nicely supported by the use of visual aids. This is the definitive book for those starting out or at the early stages of their Project Engineering careers and provides excellent guidance and refresher material for the more experienced Project Engineers. I have been in Project Engineering for over thirty years and found great value from it, so much so from now on I will be using it as my project engineering source of reference. I highly recommend this book.”
